Togonon
Gallery is pleased to present “Cautionary Tales–Paintings and Drawings
by Jane Catlin.” This is the first solo show for the Utah-based artist
at Togonon Gallery. The exhibition will run from March 6-April
12, 2008 with a public reception on Thursday, March 6, 2008 from
5:30-8:00 p.m.
Our heightened sense of mortality is rendered more evident by Catlin’s
decade-long investigation on environmental changes brought about
by population growth and rapid industrialization. Painted in vibrating
colors on mylar and linen surfaces, Catlin’s images of beauty
and mystery document what is happening to the earth and make our
collective dilemma more comprehensible.
Catlin’s art transports us into the microscopic world--the
realm of the not-so-obvious-to-the-naked-eye. She synthesizes
painting, drawing, and printmaking to highlight biological alterations
from environmental degradation highlighting interconnectedness and
dependence that are critical to survival.
Jane Catlin (MFA, Rhode Island School of Design) has exhibited across
the U.S. and internationally. She lives and works in Logan, Utah
where she is Associate Professor of Art at
Utah State University.

Togonon Gallery is pleased to present this exhibition introducing
San Francisco based photographers Hiroyo Kaneko and Chris McCaw.
Both photographers depict ways in which sun and sunlight reveal
forms and produce photographic images, with dramatically different
results.
Hiroyo Kaneko earned her MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art
Institute. “The Three Cornered World” consists of vertical shots
that trace the photographer’s eye on its journey through scenes of
sunlight, shadow, architecture and life. Born and raised in
Japan, she studied French Literature at Meiji Gakuin University in
Tokyo and subsequently relocated to Europe where she published work on
contemporary photography and photographers for Esquire Japan, Asahi
Camera and Nihon Camera. The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo has
exhibited her series “Along Leaves” and “Bushes and Palace.”
Chris McCaw completed his BFA in Photography at the Academy of Art. His
“Sunburn” series takes the idea of a photograph's ability to record
light to the outer boundaries of the medium, allowing a primal look at
the physical and aesthetic evidence of the sun. Having exhibited
nationally and abroad, his work has been reviewed by Daylight magazine,
View Camera Magazine, International FotoTage Mannheim/Ludwigshafen, Das
Bild Forum, Germany, Recontres Photographiques Image/Imatge, France and
SF Camerawork Journal of Photographic Art. In 2008, he received the
Alternative Exposure Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation and Southern
Exposure in San Francisco. His work is in the collections of George
Eastman House International Museum of Photography, Museum of Fine Arts
Houston, Harry Ransom Center of Humanities at University of Texas,
Museum of Photographic Arts of San Diego, and many private collections.
Togonon Gallery is a dynamic exhibition space where both artist
and the public discover the distinctive qualities inherent in West
Coast art. Our passion is to present exhibitions that ignite
the discourse on contemporary life and will engage and expand the
audience for the art. We represent established and emerging artists
primarily from the San Francisco Bay area and the West Coast.
