Viva Paredes and Elvira Sarmiento address the subject of globalization in form and content in their second exhibition together and first show at the gallery.

Paredes draws from Mexican and Chicano heritage history, combining migration, Mayan glyphs, and organic materials such as corn seeds to express the tension between the new and the traditional.  Former Mexican Museum Curator Tere Romo writes: “Successfully combining technical proficiency with strong aesthetic principles, Paredes’ art explores cultural issues, underscores spiritual connections, and promotes environmental responsibility.”  The artist lives and works in San Francisco and earned her BFA at California College of Arts and Crafts in 2001. A monograph of the artist’s work, with essay by Tere Romo, accompanies the exhibition.

[Working in Mexico City, Elvira Sarmiento creates paintings and works on paper work that communicates the impact of globalization on the local.  Self-described as a neo-expressionist/postmodernist, the artist describes her art thusly:  “the possibilities of social development are detained, the disintegration of political, economical and social modernity makes an alleged state of chaos, unrecognizable, incomprehensible and in despair”.  Internationally recognized, institutions in Mexico, Cuba, Spain & Poland have collected Sarmiento’s work.

About the Artists
David Johnson graduated from the very first American fine art photography class established by Ansel Adams and directed by Minor White in 1946 at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI), then known as the California School of Fine Arts. Himself an African American, he focused on the Fillmore neighborhood’s way of life, its nightclubs, businesses, and residents. Johnson's photographs are featured in a PBS documentary about San Francisco, “The Fillmore” and are published in several books, including The Moment of Seeing and Harlem of the West.

Jack Fulton is recognized as an important photographer of the West Coast. One of the founders of SF Camerawork and San Francisco Art Institute teacher, he is a three-time NEA recipient and has been widely published in Fine Art photo surveys, including those of the San Francisco MOMA and the Oakland Museum. His work is in the collections of SF MOMA, Biblioteque National, Paris MuseČ, MuseČ de Art Moderne (Paris), LA County Museum, Chicago Art Institute, University of Arizona, San Jose Museum of Art, DiRosa Foundation and the Oakland Museum. “A Vainglorious Decade” premieres his unique vintage Cibachrome dye-bleached photographs of the West Coast in the 1970s.
