Steve Baibak: An Inherited
Dystopia
Sculptures from recycled materials
Togonon Gallery is pleased to present An Inherited Dystopia,
the
artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. The essay “Steve Baibak
Blows His Inheritance on Sculptures,” by art writer Mary Catherine
Cusack proclaims, “With the eye of a photographer and the mind of a
sculptor, Steve Baibak sees landscapes in raw materials and morphs them
into forms that can be viewed almost simultaneously as both macrocosms
and microcosms.”
Baibak’s work is based on found discarded objects and the process of
their re-contextualization and transformation into sculpture. The
inherited past and culture of these objects brings a new life to the
original objects individually and to the final sculpture collectively.
His work presents a response to a dichotomy of themes including
inheritance and apocalypse. In this “dystopia” an apocalyptic life is
lined with deprivation and oppression, where else is there to turn?
These common household objects suddenly begin to take on completely new
meanings and levels of worth. Baibak explains, “I aim to jettison the
instant familiarity of commonplace articles into extraordinary nebulas
of the unimaginable.”
Steve Baibak received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute
in 1999, where he was the recipient of several honors awards. He
has worked as an apprentice with numerous Bay Area sculptors, including
Carl Dern, Su-Chen Hung, Malcolm Jones, William Wareham, Richard
Burger, and Ann Weber.

Brigid McCabe: Daily /inventory
Solo Exhibition: Paintings
Togonon Gallery is pleased to present Daily /inventory, Brigid McCabe’s
first solo exhibition at Togonon Gallery. The show includes a small
collection grid of the 23 small paintings, mixed media. Brigid McCabe
combines abstract and representational symbols that investigate
communication, interaction, and travels within created spaces. Christina
Waters, PhD UC Santa Cruz describes McCabe’s new paintings
as, “A vernacular world of daily observations that read as
visual meditation. McCabe maps the mundane into rhythmic grids,
grids that not so much control and confine, but whose easy playfulness
serves to reinforce and highlight.”
McCabe captures the magic and charm of the daily routine. Her paintings
create a journey, charting and mapping these everyday experiences
through shape, color, and line. Finding that habit, memory, and
observations are what bring together visual diaries. McCabe explains,
“I create forms and patterns that communicate how people react
with their surroundings to create the comfort that’s required
to navigate chaos in their worlds.”
Brigid obtained her BFA from UC Santa Cruz in 2004 and completed
her MFA at Boston University in 2006. She lives and works in the
Bay Area.
Togonon Gallery is a dynamic exhibition space where both artist
and the public discover the distinctive qualities inherent in West
Coast art. Our passion is to present exhibitions that ignite the
discourse on contemporary life and will engage and expand the audience
for the art. We are pleased to present this important artist who,
we believe, will resonate with West Coast residents.
