Edith Hillinger was born in Berlin and spent her formative years in Turkey before moving to the US as a young adult. She studied art at New York University and Cooper Union School of Art. After finishing her Artist-in-Residence at the MacDowell Colony and Montalvo Center for the Arts, she secured the position as artist in residence at New Pacific School in New Zealand.

As an artist, Hillinger re-enacts the age-old practice of direct observation in the field prior to studio work. Using a digital camera as an aid in the precise study of botanical forms, she retreats to her studio in which acute observation is transformed into creative gesture.
