Chris McCaw’s newest "Sunburn"
series take the idea of a photograph's ability to record light to
the outer boundaries of the medium, allowing a primal look at the
physical and aesthetic evidence of the sun. San Francisco Chronicle
art critic Kenneth Baker describes them as “self-portraits
of the sun – literally burned into photographic paper.”
Rei Masuda, Curator of Photography, The National Museum of Modern
Art, Tokyo comments: McCaw accidentally found that the sun imprints
its locus into film by literally burning it inside the camera. Tracing
itself among static landscapes, the sun reveals unusual facets.”
Having exhibited nationally and abroad, McCaw’s work has been
reviewed by Daylight magazine, View Camera Magazine, International
FotoTage Mannheim/Ludwigshafen, Das Bild Forum, Germany, Recontres
Photographiques Image/Imatge, France and SF Camerawork Journal of
Photographic Art. In 2007, he received the Alternative Exposure
Grant from the Andy Warhol Foundation and Southern Exposure in San
Francisco.
McCaw’s work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum,
George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, Museum
of Fine Arts Houston, Princeton Museum, Harry Ransom Center of Humanities
at University of Texas, Museum of Photographic Arts of San Diego,
and many private collections.
