Marion Gray is widely recognized for transforming the documentation of performance into an art form. She has been active in the Bay Area are scene since the 1970’s. Her works capture emblematic social gestures through the juxtaposition of time and body language. Throughout her lifetime of work, she has created an expansive archive which including photography of artists such as Joseph Beuys, Rinde Eckert, Alison Knowles, Tom Marioni and Charlotte Moorman. Her work is constantly questioning and expanding the boundaries of visual documentation. Terri Cohn, Curator for Meridian Gallery said of her work, “Marion Gray’s photographs present a unique and multifaceted portrait of the remarkable individuals and events that have defined the Bay Area art world and beyond over the past 40 years.” Gray graduated in 1975 from the University of Berkeley where she studied Art History with Peter Selz, and in the Art Practice Department with Jam Melchert, Peter Voulkos and Joan Brown. Her work has been shown throughout the United States and Europe. Gray currently lives and works in San Francisco.
