Lora Groves

Lora Groves’ mixed media paintings are about exploration. In them Groves explores her relationship to the world around her, capturing with dynamic abstraction the universal in the particular. Influenced by the natural world around her, Groves has established a collaborative relationship with nature, allowing it to leave its mark on her canvases. While exploring her relationship with nature is key to her creative process, Groves is equally interested in exploring the technical aspect of her work. Having experimented in photography and figurative painting, Groves’ current work is an exploration of abstract painting, sharp lines and organic forms on a variety of surfaces. Most of her work on linen fabric, finished with sewn edges, and hangs tapestry-style. In these pieces she combines thick gestures in pigment with beads, buttons, and other items to create a textural landscape that invites exploration. In contrast, her newest work is acrylic on concrete board. Groves received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005 and completed completed a residency at the Morris Graves Foundation in the summer of 2010. Her work has been exhibited throughout California and in galleries nationwide.
