Allen Guilmette's work, which includes drawings, paintings and
installation, lends a new window into the appreciation of minimalism
that emerged in the 1960s. Curator D. Scott Atkinson links Guilmette's
work to West Coast minimalism - having a sense of volume, creating the
illusion of both interior and exterior dimensions, without gesutre,
devoid of illustrative content, and stripped to its barest essentials.
In a movement founded in simplicity, Guilmette has created his own
signature by challenging the fundamental principles of The Rule of
Scaling a Rectangle by imposing new rules. According to the artist, his
compositions are intricate panels that "explore man's ability to
comprehend visual, mathematical or situational perceptions."
Guilmette
was an understudy of Jim McWilliams, a luminary in the Fluxus movement.
He obtained his BFA from Hartford Art School at the University of
Hartford, an incubator for minimalism and conceptualism and was often
visited by the likes of Carl Andre, Steve Reich and Vito Acconci. He
now resides in San Diego where he is an active particpant of inSite, a
bi-national exhibition exploring cultural contrast between Mexico and
the United States.
